Irish writer Don Byrne was born Brian Oswald Patrick Don-Byrne on November 20, 1889 in New York. At the time, his Irish parents were on a business trip and he had just returned to Ireland with them. He grew up in an area where Gaelic was still spoken and was equally fluent in Irish and English. He appears in Bloomer Hobson’s Chronicle of the Irish Volunteer Movement as a singing blond boy. In 1906, when he was 14 years old, he went to a meeting in London with Hobson and Robert Lind of the Daily News. Lind wrote about the encounter and mentioned a poem by the blonde boy, or Don Byrne. Through Hobson, Byrne acquired a taste for Irish history and nationalism. In 1907 he went to University College Dublin to study Romance languages. While he was in school he published a series in the student magazine ‘The National Student’. After his graduation he continued his studies in Europe with the aim of joining the British Foreign Office. When he learned that he would have to wear night clothes for an early morning examination, he is said to have “rejected his Ph.D.,” something that a true Irish gentleman probably wouldn’t do. I guess he felt it. After leaving the ministry, he returned to New York in 1911 and began working first at the Catholic Encyclopedia, the New Standard Dictionary, and then the Century Dictionary. In February 1912, his poem “The Piper” was published in Harper’s Magazine. His first short story, “Battle”, was sold to Smart His Set magazine for his $50 soon after and was published in the February 1914 issue, and he sold many more novels to various magazines. Some of these were anthologized in his first book, Tales Without Women (1915). He then began writing his first novel, The Stranger’s Dinner (1919). From this point on he became a prolific short story writer. His novel Field of Honor was published after his death in 1929. His poems were collected in a collection of poems and published as Songs (1934). Despite his wife’s success as a playwright and his growing popularity as a writer, his family’s financial hardships forced him to sell their Riverside, Connecticut home and return to Ireland. Eventually the family purchased Colmaine Castle near Bandon, County Cork. He lived here until his death in June 1928 in a traffic accident due to steering failure. He is buried in the churchyard of Las Clarins, near Colmain Castle. His gravestone reads in Irish and English: “I’m sleeping, please don’t wake me.” sauce
