“Baccharat is the most famous name in glassmaking and the only great 19th-century glassmaker that remains in business today,” explains artist Aegidius Forster, Head of the 19th-Century Furniture and Sculpture Department at Christie’s London.

A Rare Dates Century Baccarat

In 1764, King Louis XV of France gave permission to set up a glass factory in the town of Baccarat. It was created in the 19th century by the Compagnie des Cristalleries de Baccarat, which produced items that were, and still are, synonymous with luxury.

In the mid-19th century, Baccarat discovered that the addition of nickel oxide in the manufacturing process created a clear, colorless product that imitated precious stone crystal. Baccarat glass is made of crystal glass, which, says Forster, is highly regarded, not only for its unusual clarity, but also for its extreme solidity and weight. The term crystal can only be applied to glass that contains at least 24 percent lead oxide.

The main areas of Baccarat production in the 19th century were dinner services, perfume bottles, paper weights and decorative items. The chandeliers are among the most expensive works of art produced by Baccarat – often for exhibition or commissioned only by the richest clients, such as the Russian tsars, the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul and the Maharajas of India.

Still made today, Baccarat chandeliers are particularly expensive, and the best examples date from the late 19th century, when Baccarat cast gilded bronze crystal glass – or ‘ormolu’, as it is known.

The ormolu-climbing cherubs on this chandelier mark it as one of the most desirable Baccarat examples of the 19th Century. The finest and most exquisite Baccarat Cups from this period feature gilded bronze or carved carvings, such as the cherubs holding candlesticks in the example shown above.

To create such elaborate and large works of art, Baccarat collaborated with sculptors such as Francis Hippolyte Moreau (1832-1927) and bronze inventors such as the Thiébaut Frères. The combination of Baccarat glass with gilded bronze makes this chandelier a simple example of glass, and even rarer.

Baccarat: Crystal Glassware Of The Highest Standards

‘I always look at the quality of the ormolu shot,’ explains Forster. “They must be cast, which were reduced before the surface was gilded and finished, and therefore between the arms and the bodies of the figures I looked for traces visible under the gilding.”

Forster is also looking for the quality of a more detailed explanation – the surface is finished, or as it is said, it is chased away. It is clear how the faces and hands are completed, that the fingers of the hands are distinct, and the faces are animated, but alive with definite features.

In the chandeliers, it is necessary that the glass drops and some reminders are lost, replaced or replaced, as the chains and drops must be removed and applied every day.

‘I was looking for the most original glass,’ said the artist. Baccarat glass is played with great skill and produced by hand. You can see this in the great irregularity of the scale hanging on the teardrops, especially.’

A glass cutter’s job is as good as a glass cutter’s job. ‘Crystal is like a sculpture carved with small variations in depth, glass is carved on a sand or diamond wheel,’ explains Forster.

‘I look at the weight of the Baccarat glass,’ explains Forster. Let it be in the hand a heavy, crystal-colored stone, whose refraction renders it slightly black when seen. The black color and exquisite cut of the Baccarat glass diffuses the light in a graceful way, sparkling with diamonds.

Forster also looks at notes, marks and signatures to determine authenticity and make an accurate time estimate. You often see a white engraved mark on Baccarat glass. In chandeliers, this is usually done in the cacabi, he says, with fake capitals. In fact, the gilded baccarat seal depicts a decanter between a wine glass and a bowl (as will be seen below).

The gilded brass base of the solid or bubble glass under the chandelier is marked with the Baccarat mark depicting a carafe between the glass and the cup.
