Bali Casino – November. Now that we’ve finally gotten over the headache of those wonderful espresso martinis and stripped away all the glam and glitz, we’ve been able to count the chips and the winnings to find out that Tir Na Nog Island’s latest fundraiser has raised an incredible 101,650,000 to collect .
As much as people don’t need an excuse to play, laugh, drink and win fantastic prizes, it was all for truly noble causes. The funds were split 50-50 with The Gili Eco Trust and another major charity, The Classroom Of Hope.

With a dramatic increase in drinking and party culture over the last 5 years, we are inundated with glass waste. This is a material that never degrades in size, shrinks or breaks, so waste continually grows with this single-use product. Since 2013, we have been experimenting with different methods to recycle and reconstruct the glass bottles and glass waste we find in landfill. The two main methods we adopt are “repurposing single-use glass bottles into usable items such as cups, lamps and ashtrays” and “crushing glass and sand to build gili from the waste”.
This unique method of brick production means that we use 100% of the glass waste created in Gili directly in Gili, whilst also creating a heavy and durable building material in Gili, to build Gili directly from the waste created.
Although we currently have a working glass cutting machine at the back of the island landfill, in our humble concrete hut, the conditions are extreme and require constant maintenance and repairs. We currently operate our machine full time and each day we can crush 100 to 200 baskets of bottles (about 7,500 bottles per day) with routine breaks to cool the machine. Sound impressive? We have to destroy even more!
With this new machine we intend to increase efficiency and the total number of bottles. By having two machines instead of one, we can increase the life of the older machine by using each one every other day to give them a break, especially if regular maintenance is required. If we have to place a large order of bricks in a short time, we can now have two machines at full capacity to fulfill orders faster and make customers even happier with their decision to build in a more conscious and environmentally friendly way, while The amount of glass waste that ends up in landfill is drastically reduced.

Our crushed glass produces a fine sandy aggregate that, when mixed with ordinary cement powder and fresh water, can be placed in molds to form strong, heavy building blocks. We invested a little more in these bricks than those normally built in Gili, which only use brackish well water, which means our freshwater bricks have a stronger lifespan and are so durable that they can be used in foundations, swimming pools and up to 2. storey buildings. However, we sell these bricks at 3,500 rp per brick, cheaper than a gili brick, but this encourages more people to switch to “eco” glass bricks to affect the environment while building and developing gili. The money raised from these bricks goes towards the salaries of the brickmaker and the glass collector at the famous Gili Trawangan landfill, and even now towards the maintenance of our ancient hard-working machine.
You can come and see the glass crushing and wall making process with your own eyes! We run small 1.5 hour recycling tours where you can discover all of our environmental projects and even help build some bricks!
If you’re reading this, chances are you have a business on Gili Trawangan.
