Stoke-on-Trent is my second home, or “wife” as they say in Stoke. Maybe I see it through red and white glasses but it’s not as bad as people think. Indeed, Stoke has the potential to be a better place, with cheap products and proper funding to replace the coal and potteries destroyed by the Thatcher government.

Josiah Wedgwood Leek commissioned engineer James Brindley to build a road to transport clay from Cornwall in front of his factory.

Tunnel, Scoreboard, Mosaics

The results allowed pottery production to flourish and for many years, most cups, plates and bowls in the UK and beyond came from a factory in Stoke.

Uniquely crafted pottery vases used to dominate the city skyline but sadly, many have been lost. There are examples that survive, however. The best, perhaps, is in Middleport along the canal.

Another major industry in the city is coal mining. Big and deep mines litter the Staffordshire area and employ thousands of people.

The closure of these two businesses has left a city without new investment and many people out of work. Buildings covered in water and industrial waste are gone.

Like the art they remember, the mining museum is also a thing of the past. Chatterley Whitfield closed in 1993 and Gladstone was due to close recently. I am happy to say that at the time of writing, it is still open…

Yes, another profound effect these industries have on the area is noise. Workers came to the area from all over the country, bringing their Geordie and Brummie accents and phrases, now known as Stokey Sound.

Stoke is full of fun and friendly people doing their best to survive in a city largely left to its own devices.
