Bet365 Linkedin – I can’t believe it’s been five years since I started my recruiting career. It’s like you don’t feel particularly old until someone reminds you that the Killers’ debut album, Hot Fuss, came out sixteen years ago. Funny. Today also marks a year since I arrived at the bet365 office in Stoke-on-Trent for my first day, and I’d like to share both experiences with you.

Maybe I’m a little too enthusiastic. Although my role is based in Manchester, everyone who joins bet365 spends their first day completing their induction in Stoke (normally, but later!). I didn’t know what the traffic would be like, so I left at 6 in the morning and arrived an hour later. I was two hours early and I remember walking around the nearby business park trying to find a coffee shop. A combination of excitement and nerves starting a new job got the best of me that morning! Luckily, Google Maps came to the rescue, I found a cafe and waited patiently for the others to arrive at a more convenient time.

After an overly enthusiastic start, I finished the induction and met Dan, the manager and my colleagues Alicia and Steph, who are part of the Technical Working Group based in Stoke. Dan arranged for me to meet with some hiring managers ahead of time, so I spent the rest of the day getting to know people in the broader tech function. I was drawn to everyone’s passion for what they were doing. It was exciting to meet the business stakeholders and now I have great relationships with them. I’m terrible with people’s names at the best of times, and at the end of the day I look at my notes and can’t remember a single person. Luckily, I’ve spent enough time talking to everyone that I don’t forget who I am now. I hope they haven’t forgotten who I am or that I’ve obviously done something wrong!

What remains from that point of view is the confusion of learning and recruiting new systems, people, departments. I remember my first straight judge. As internal recruiters, we don’t have a goal, but the transition from your first job to a new job is always exciting, and in some ways, a transition process. When I join a new company, I feel a certain amount of internal pressure to fulfill my first role, and I was delighted when Steve Gaughan accepted the position of Data Analytics Manager about a month after joining. I recently worked with Steve to build a team of quantitative analysts, and this is one of the main things that drives me to be an internal recruiter – your recruiters will one day become your hiring managers, and that’s great, they’ve already built a level of mutual trust.

A lot has changed since joining the company a year ago. Of course, no one could have predicted what was going to happen with Covid and I don’t think I was very lucky. No one at Bet365 Technology, including myself, has made any guarantees and our plans as a business to expand will not change. Recruitment has shown no signs of slowing down and we have welcomed many new colleagues, even from a distance. We are now in a situation where many of us are returning to our offices with the flexibility to work from home when needed. The company has worked hard to ensure our offices exceed the government’s Covid Safe Workplace requirements and it’s great to be back. While working from home is enjoyable, I generally feel more energetic and productive in an office environment and prefer the flexibility of working from home when I want. There are only so many Zoom conferences one person can take!

Today also marks my 5th birthday. Like many others, I was attracted by the prospect of earning more by working for an institution after graduating from college. Honestly, I didn’t know what else to do, but I always loved technology and it seemed pretty good to me at the time. My career began at Rullion, where I joined the IT business development team. It quickly became clear that cold calling and hard selling are not for me, but I do enjoy working with existing accounts and bringing these clients to the table. As it turned out, money didn’t really motivate me in this environment. After about six months at the new job (I think

Would be a more appropriate term) I moved to become a Board Member and it was the best move I ever made. This role taught me much of what I know today about the resilience and commitment needed to be successful in recruiting, and I am grateful for the experience. I have met some amazing people, some of whom have started their own recruitment businesses and are doing amazing things. I knew my true passion was building relationships with hiring managers and being the go-to person for internal team development, and this was a step in the right direction.

Another thing to note about my time at Rullion was working for John Hitchenor, the manager at the time. John is one of the nicest guys and one of the best people managers I’ve ever met and I’m still in touch with. His office door was always open and he really brought out the best in everyone. He also added passion to everything he did. I remember the first Christmas party; I had only been there a few months and knew everyone, including John. About the middle of the night, and for reasons I do not fully understand, John took a large bucket of ice water, stood on one of the chairs, and poured it over his head. The dress she was wearing would not be good. The room was shot up. Leadership recruiting agency, I guess.

During my time at Rullion, I took on a number of clients including United Utilities and the Co-op, the latter of which was undergoing digital transformation in its funeral business at the time. But even though I worked for two specific clients, I felt a degree of connection between these companies and my role. I’ve built lasting relationships with the hiring managers and candidates I’ve referred, but I still don’t feel apart of what’s happening internally at these companies. At this point, I knew I wanted to work at home and be closer to the action, so I applied for Sainsbury’s technical recruitment.

Sainsbury’s has been a great company to work for. It’s been over two and a half years and I’m still in touch with everyone who works there. The work itself was fun and the internal training and development was second to none. I recommend him as an employer to anyone. From interactive courses to spending a day learning Cloud Computing with AWS Architects, much of my knowledge of technical recruiting comes from this role and I feel blessed to have learned so much. I joined as a technology recruiter and after 11 months became a senior recruiter, with additional responsibilities with other seniors, such as managing relationships with external PSL recruitment agencies and representing Sainsbury’s at various technology conferences.

As a technology recruiter, you talk to hiring managers and candidates over time to understand the roles you’re applying for. But nothing beats self-guided training courses. Back to my notes from today’s sessions.

A Day In The Life Of Kieran Balmer

As well as developing my skills, I had the best nights with the Sainsbury’s team and I look back on them with very happy memories. The team culture was great and we had a really great night. I think happiness is a feeling that sometimes returns. If you are on top of everything throughout the day, it is a great feeling to celebrate your overall achievements with the team afterwards.

All of which brings me to today and page 365. This is a very exciting time as we expand into the US market. The laws for online gambling have changed and this gives us a lot of room to grow; We are already the world’s favorite online gaming company and we aim to succeed in the pool as well. As you can imagine, all our systems, infrastructure, software teams and more have had to expand to keep up with this, and we are currently helping to lead people across the Technology spectrum in Manchester and Stoke. our future. I’ve never seen anything like it – we’re done now
