I have worked for bet365 for three years, with Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) being my current role. I joined the team in July 2020 when I moved from Software Development (Sports) where, like many, I was a developer. At the beginning of my bet365 journey I was thrown in the deep end, as I learned not only the essential principles of software development, but also programming languages such as Golang and Typescript (which was completely new to me). I contributed to the introduction of Golang to the Sports codebase and after gaining a knack for performance programming, I felt it was time to broaden my horizons and take on a new challenge; that challenge was SRE.

The SRE team is one of the newest teams within the ever-growing and diverse DevOps department. As the name of the department suggests, we are located between the Development and Operations departments of the company. Our most important projects and workflows to date fit into one (or more!) of these categories:
At the time of writing, the team consists of the Site Reliability Manager, Team Leader, Technical Lead and nine Site Reliability Engineers (including juniors) and growing! Each member of the team has their own unique background and skills and has found their own place within SRE. Some come from IT Operations, others have moved from Infrastructure Systems and some have even moved from Software Development.
Having a strong background in software development, I was tasked with adding code testing structure to our applications and making sure it worked as part of our Continuous Delivery (CD). This meant that going forward we would have the confidence not only to deliver tools and monitoring applications to our partner teams, but also the confidence that any future changes would be a must.
This project was followed by the takeover of a sub-department of a giant IT Operations procedure: Site Downs. Site Downs is a critical Operational procedure that needs to be done a few times a year, usually when maintenance needs to be done on the “big” databases. SRE was tasked with automating and simplifying part of this process to reduce the heavy workload (manual work), the need for communication between teams and the space for human error. A project like this requires due diligence; After all, we are operating in a production environment. This means that thorough UAT and production testing by IT Operations and any relevant service owners must be carried out to ensure that the tool meets requirements and is safe to use. This level of caution and responsibility is an important part of the Site Reliability Engineer role.
