Blackjack Clothing – These days most shoppers associate Club 21 (celebrating its golden jubilee this year) with Club 21, the Four Seasons Hotel’s multi-label store and separate men’s and women’s departments. Those in the know will be able to recognize other one-off brands under Group 21, such as Jil Sander, Comme des Garcons, and newcomer Issey Miyake, all of which are based at Voco Orchard (formerly Hilton Singapore), but still as Is known. Shopping Gallery. However, there were other multi-label stores within Singapore’s most famous department stores. The one that immediately comes to mind is Blackjack (in the Shopping Gallery Forum), Club 21’s mid-’90s adventure complete with costumes.
Brands, like Helmut Lang and Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair, as well as street/athletic-focused labels (still minimal), like Y3.

To be fair, Blackjack opened in 1996 at HPL House, the headquarters of HPL- Hotel Properties Limited, a group of some of the best luxury hotels in the world. At the time it was considered the hippest store for young people, a haven for street style that featured Japanese labels like Tsumori Chisato as well as UK labels like Maharshi. It even had a Blackjack Café (once Scoops, a Häagen-Dazs ice cream parlor). But, Blackjack was probably way ahead of its time.

), once stated in a newspaper that “There’s nothing in this store for more than 20.” Blackjack closed after two years due to poor conditions and, perhaps more directly, the financial difficulties of the time. Although there were initial rumors that they would be located at Pacific Plaza (at the time, a posh mall that housed Prada), they chose HPL’s Forum The Shopping Mall, formerly Forum Galleria.
Compared to its quieter neighbors, Blackjack’s new store stands out with its elegant asymmetry and its original, glamorous self. We remember the unusual and slightly squishy rubber floors and similarly colored storage units. The space was not very large, but still had a central shelf, which hung from a stainless steel pot attached to the ceiling. Some industries were affected, including Halloween flavors. Some shoppers were put off, thinking it was in line with Club 21 stores, but their arrival brought a mix of merchandise that spoke to the wedding details of the time. Blackjack closed down completely in 2011 after 15 years of impressive performance. Instead it was the most intimate and, dare we say it,
(It has also recently moved out, and is in two undisclosed units at Voco Orchard). But blackjack is set to make a comeback this month. Seeing the black and white spot (above) and the updated logo a few days ago, we had a feeling something interesting was about to happen.

Of course, Blackjack wasn’t the first to enter the hipster market at the time. The template was created by Blue Moon, a sales block created suddenly by HPL in 1991. Blue Moon was different from anything else under HPL’s relatives, the Club 21 Group. It was not in the Hilton Shopping Gallery (an HPL property, now Voco Orchard) or any mall, not even an HPL-owned shopping mall. Well, Blue Moon was at HPL House on Cuscadden Road,
Hard Rock Café opened a year ago, and interestingly, it is the first Emporio Armani store on our island. From Orchard Road, you could barely see it. An isolated address, some have said: still on our island’s only shopping belt, but away from the main drag.
Blue Moon was a line because it was the closest to street fashion that was not an obvious homage to hip hop. It was similar to what you would have seen in London’s Covent Garden (90s). There were many brands in 7,300 square feet (or 678 square meters) (essential products, other than brand names, were the driving force) – now there were too many brands to remember. But what was unique about Blue Moon was their openness towards local labels. One of them was Argentum, an indie jewelry brand that’s still in business today. Unfortunately, with the changing tides of fashion and taste, Blue Moon closed in 1995. The charge of covering youth expenses was transferred to Blackjack at the same location, but it too was closed in 1998. Unlike Blackjack, Blue Moon was not considered for a revival. , We can’t say yet what the new Blackjack will have in stock, but we hope it stays in line with its consistent past.
Blackjack is expected to open on December 8 at Level 2, The Shopping Gallery, Voco Orchard. Photo: A week before Chin Boh, the new Blackjack was unveiled. It is now an independent retailer with its own eponymous label. will you put it?

Blackjack is back, as we reported two weeks ago. Once a multi-label store, they are now a single-brand boutique in The Shopping Gallery (Voko Orchard), designed to cater to Gen-Z and younger customers. This becomes apparent as soon as you come across the all-glass front of the back-to-escalator unit. In contrast to the green tables on which the casino banking game that gave this fashion label its name is played, the interior is essentially black and white, a stark contrast to the CC you know in your neighborhood. It clearly reminded us of the Alexander Wang stores in China (interestingly, The Shopping Gallery, which opened in 2012, is now closed). And, there are also Tokyo’s #FFFFFFFT and its sibling #000T shops that offer White Arrow and Black Arrow respectively. Blackjack is now a “luxury fashion label” with a street vibe.
The clothes, designed by Club 21’s creative director Aish Ghazali, are marketed to people who have a casual wardrobe and want to keep it that way. Nearly every piece in the first “capsule,” described by the brand as “limited edition,” is for occasions where the dress would answer, “Going to a wedding?” Don’t get us wrong. The clothes may be suitable for an evening event, such as a night out at a bar or club with your close, noisy friends, but beyond that, it lacks the versatility we’d imagine from such a line. There will be benefit. T-shirts and, no surprise, hoodies dominate, but they’re not the kind you can use for exercise or wear to next month’s reunion dinner. (Interestingly, each piece is pre-school only.) Although we were told by the staff that “the clothes are unisex,” the store appears to be divided into two sections: for men and women. As the clerk said, women lift rakes and utensils. They talk to us about campus chic and will probably wear a pair of Hawaiians or, if open toes aren’t a priority, definitely white Crocs.
Despite being a store established in the mid-1990s, the Blackjack label is not as much a collection of jeans or casual clothing as Juicy Couture of that era. It has more in common with current artists, matching Balenciaga’s grand aesthetic (its fate after the Christmas ad controversy, unknown). But unlike brands that have moved quickly into oversized T-shirts and midriffs, Blackjack is quite design-focused. Quality of fabric choice (feels like a double cotton shirt down to the sleeves – really nice hand feel), fit (not ridiculously big), logo position (stitching!), and great thought given to details. Has gone. Trims. (Also in the back). We love the contrast cutouts that tie in the back of some T-shirts, but not the elastic on pants, shorts and dresses with logos that scream Alexander Wang. I am sorry.
It’s great that not only online but also a physical store has been opened to encourage people who want to know about the brand to get a proper feel of the product before making a purchase. This is especially important when you consider that clothes produced by “luxury fashion labels” aren’t exactly cheap. The most expensive T-shirt is S$120 and a nylon tote is S$190. These prices may not seem strange to those who are already paying big bucks for Gucci x Adidas. It can be safely said that no one in their target market will forget old Blackjack. This could be a brand new fashion name and few people would know better. Therefore, his connection to his past cannot be fully understood. In a monochromatic space, the bold images of HPL House’s first store explain the brand’s origins. A pair of old Maharishi pants (apparently from the Blackjack collaboration) hang to the left of the entrance. Do allusions to the past lend credibility to a new apparel brand of the present?
