Casino Beach – Casino Beach Reef is the newest facility in Escambia County that divers and swimmers can access from Pensacola Beach. The reef was built in 2020 by Escambia County Marine Resources to support local diving opportunities along the coast. Named in honor of Charlie Gonzalez, the late Director of Geographic Information Systems. The site, whose full name is Charles Fennell Gonzalez, IV, Casino Beach Reef, is located about 1,500 feet east of the Pensacola Fishing Pier and consists of 17 reef modules constructed of limestone, concrete and fiberglass. A reef module can stand six feet above the sand. A moderate swim from the beach is worth it. This is because the structure is only 8-15 feet deep, depending on the wind and waves. Visibility is usually 10-30 feet when conditions are suitable for diving. This place is famous for its bright, roaring fishes and beautiful butterflies. Sometimes you can see sea turtles and octopus resting near the reef. This makes it a great adventure for swimmers and divers.
Diving in this area includes moderate swimming. But it is very manageable on days with calm surf conditions. This location can be found by parking in the main Pensacola Beach parking lot. Approach the Crabs restaurant and go to the beach. Two signs facing the water behind the Crab Ponds (east of the entrance). and the seaside symbol is a solid yellow triangle. Divers and divers can move around on the reef while holding the buoy markers while swimming. The module starts about 650′-700′ from shore. As you approach the reef, you may hear the loud crackling sound of the resident gun shrimp. Many divers will find themselves on the triangular reef, as the Beach Water Tower passes through the brown tower of the Verandas Residence.
