Casino Jobs – As a professional table game dealer for many years, Steve Slobin said that successful dealers must also have excellent interpersonal skills. As gaming director at Monarch Casino Resort Spa in Black Hawk, he oversees approximately 250 employees at the popular mountain casino.

In addition to his love for the game and honing his craft, Slobin prides himself on helping people grow and develop as a dealer while maintaining motivation for more repeat business. We sat down with Zlobin to learn more about how it works.

Describe your job as a table game dealer at Monarch Casino. “The job of a table game dealer is first and foremost to entertain, while adhering to strict rules on how the game is handled. Our guests come here to escape the hustle and bustle, have fun and have personal interaction. Unlike slot machines, where machines are impersonal, table games are The emphasis is on human interaction and the experience at the table. Whether your game of choice is craps, roulette, blackjack, or baccarat, the dealer is an important part of the game and experience.

What else do dealers do? “The dealer is your guide to new games and builds a relationship with you over time. For many guests, the dealer and supervisor they see regularly while playing games become part of their extended family. They celebrate birthdays and anniversaries, and share their issues with the dealer. I’ve even seen dealers and executives help people grieve when a loved one passes away. As with any entertainer, the dealer can determine your experience, regardless of where you are at the table Any luck on that. What does a typical day look like? “In this industry, we say there is no such thing as a typical day. When the dealer comes to work, find out what game you are working on that day and head to that table. That’s usually where the day ends because once the shift starts, anything goes It all can happen. You might be dealing with a group of business professionals, attending a birthday party or a group of guests for a night out. What should dealers pay attention to when new players come in? “As a dealer, you have to be like a chameleon at the poker table. Different people want different experiences, some want a loud, lively table with cheers and celebration, while other guests prefer something quieter , a more conversational experience. Good dealers are able to identify the experience their guests are looking for and adapt to it.

How did you get into this career? “Like most people who work in casinos, I got into this industry: completely by accident. I was in college in Iowa and playing poker at a local casino on the weekends. Like many college students, I took a job as a bartender. A purposeless part-time job to pay for school. I didn’t particularly enjoy the job and didn’t get anything out of it. While checking my player card points online, I saw the casino advertise a part-time dealer position and I thought to myself : “I can do that” and applied. The interview went well and they offered to train me in blackjack, craps and roulette. The training schedule was very flexible and enjoyable in my class .The rest is history.”

Have you always wanted to work in the hospitality industry? “Actually, it was never quite the opposite. In high school I focused on STEM fields and majored in electrical engineering in college. I’ve always been interested in technical things and loved tinkering with cars, appliances and computers. When I was in the casino business , I absolutely fell in love with it. Few industries offer such a wide range of people, departments, and jobs as the casino business. It’s a fun, fast-paced, and rewarding environment unmatched by most other careers.

Are you from Colorado? How do you get to Monarch Casino? “I’m the furthest thing from a Colorado native. I was born in Ukraine and moved to the United States with my family in the late ’90s. After a brief stay in New York, my family moved to Iowa, where I lived for ten years. In college, I visited a friend who came to Colorado for school and fell in love with the state. In 2010, when gaming limits were raised from $5 to $100 and casinos allowed games like craps and roulette, I Jumped at the opportunity and turned to play. When Monarch announced plans for a remodel, expansion and hotel, I was very interested. I spoke to a few people I knew in the industry and saw what this company has to offer not only to the property but to the market as a whole vision and decided this was my new home. I joined the organization in 2014 as a Casino Shift Manager, working on the garage demolition, remodel, and hotel expansion. In 2016, I was given the opportunity to take on a leadership role in the table gaming department.

What are the highlights of your job? “The highlight of my job is the team and our guests. The people I work with are definitely a highlight, we are in the entertainment industry after all. In the last year, my team has grown from 65 people to almost 250 people, which is something I look forward to every day The biggest reason to come to work. It’s really rewarding to see someone go from knowing nothing about table games, to being trained as a dealer, hitting the tables for the first time, and then within a few years becoming one of the best dealers in the department. It’s worth it. Helping people grow and reach their full potential inspires me and the rest of the leadership team.

What about your guests? “Another highlight of the job is our guests. You get to meet people from all walks of life. We exchange stories and experiences about things and places I didn’t know existed. The interactions and friendships over the years have been priceless and allowed me to A better person.

Do you have any interesting stories to share? “In my 20 years in gaming, I’ve seen our guests take on small jobs that changed their lives, long-term players lose loved ones and find healing while playing birthday roulette, team members join our training programs, change fields and Discovery. A career with purpose and growth. I’ve been to hundreds of bachelorette parties and birthday parties. Random New Year’s Eve encounters with old friends and ended up making hundreds of memories. Any advice for players? “Don’t be afraid to get your hands on the game – the best way to learn the game is to get involved and start asking questions. What about the rules? “Some rules are posted and easy to understand, but some are only discovered when you break them. Don’t be shy; it’s all part of learning.
