Casino Royale is a 1967 British-American spy film based on Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel (1953). The film has a reputation for being incoherent due to a chaotic production.
Bond (David Niven) lives a rich life after retiring from MI6. However, as agents from different countries are mysteriously murdered, his former boss M (John Huston) and other international intelligence officials force him to return to work. Bond learns that one of the targets of the investigation is a rich gambler named Le Cheever (Orson Welles), who is in fact the main agent of a criminal group called “SMERSH”. Bond decided to hire many agents to take on the name James Bond to confuse his enemies. He uses the services of agent Vesper Lind (Ursula Andress) to seduce Evelyn Treble (Peter Sellers), the world’s greatest baccarat player. Tremble agreed to impersonate James Bond and Le Chiffre agreed to challenge him to a high-stakes game at the famous Casino Royale, a cover for the SMERSH operation. Tremble won the competition, and Le Chiffre lost a large sum of money from the crime syndicate, a mistake that led to Le Chiffre’s death. When Linde is kidnapped at the casino, Treble races to save her. However, he discovers too late that she is a double agent and will kill him.
Meanwhile, the real Bond successfully confronts Dr. Noah, the secret leader of SMERSH, who is his nephew Jimmy Bond (Woody Allen). Jimmy comes up with some amazing plans, including wiping out everyone above him and developing a time-release atomic bomb hidden in a pill. A British agent (Dalia LaVey) sneaks one of the pills into Jimmy’s champagne, turning it into a walking atomic time bomb. Meanwhile, a fierce battle begins at Casino Royale as MI6 and its allies (including US agents dressed as cowboys and Indians) battle SMERSH forces. However, no one emerges victorious as Jimmy’s bomb explodes, killing everyone in the casino.
It is the only Bond novel not copyrighted by producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman. Instead of trying to compete with Sean Connery’s successful film, the filmmakers decided to turn the novel into a parody. However, the production quickly spiraled out of control, with five directors working simultaneously but never in sync with each other. Eight screenwriters (mostly uncredited) also contributed to the script, including Billy Wilder, Joseph Heller and Ben Hecht. There were also problems with the actors, especially Sellers, who did not get along well with Welles and refused to shoot scenes with him. Ultimately, Sellers left the production. The resulting film is fragmented and almost incomprehensible. However, with an all-star cast, superb production design, and a score featuring Burt Bacharach and Herb Alpert,
