Boldly executed in single ink, these hanging scrolls depict a dragon and a tiger. They are on loan from famous Korean art collectors, and Norton is grateful to be able to share this dynamic duo with you. This monochromatic ink painting of a dragon and tiger comes from Mu Chi, a monk active in the late 1200s, China’s unsurpassed master of Zen Buddhist painting. Mu Chi’s paintings, done in black ink, embody the essence of Zen Buddhism, a fusion of Buddhist and Taoist ideas. This painting shows the power of the Mu Chi style, with tigers and dragons representing the supernatural powers of animals, and clear ink, fluid brushwork. A dragon emerges from the waves and sits on the swirling clouds in the sky, while a listening tiger sits comfortably under a pine tree whose bamboo is blowing in the cool breeze. This description captures the sentiments of Mu Chi in his famous Dragon Book of 1269: “The dragon rises and causes the clouds to appear.” The corresponding phrase on Mu Chi’s tiger slide is: “The tiger roared, and the wind blew fast.” Like the works of Mu Chi, these paintings depict the dragon as the ruler of the water and the tiger as the master of the land animals.

The examination became the highest official in Beijing and number 11 in 1424. He was the head of the Department of Penalties and a member of the Department of Justice. He was also a trained professional. Emperor Zhengtong (1st Emperor 1435-1449) enjoyed reciting his poetry when he was slightly drunk and nicknamed him “Poetry and Wine Zhang”. It is now believed that a contact in Korea gave Zhang Chun the paintings. The poem on the image of the dragon shows the power of the dragon to cause rain, while the poem on the image of the tiger describes the power of the tiger to control the wind. In Zen Buddhism, these rulers of heaven and earth bring the blessings of life, death and peace.

It wasn’t until the 900s that dragons and tigers became subjects of Chinese painting. In the 1700s, a Chinese artist copied a Korean tiger painting included in “Sacred Animals” and carefully applied a light bath, which can be seen in the following artwork to the nose, fur, and pine needles.

Japanese artist Tosa Yukihiro’s Parinirvana painting depicts tigers and dragons mourning the passing of Shakyamuni Buddha from this world to nirvana. Yukihiro’s revival of the Yamato-e painting style was inspired by the recognition of the bold, spontaneous, and abstract style of Zen single-ink painting, seen in 15th-century Korean dragon and tiger paintings.

Tigers and dragons appear in early Chinese art, such as a decorated tiger from the Shang Dynasty about 3,200 years ago, and a decorated dragon from the Zhou Dynasty from 2,400 years ago in the Norton Collection. Taoist philosophical and cosmological texts written about 2,000 years ago record the dragon as the divine protector of the East and the tiger of the West. According to Taoist belief, the tiger (west, wind) and the dragon (east, water) rule yin and yang, which creates a feeling commonly called zen (Chinese).
