The 2021 Vacheron Constantin Historiques American 1921 Editions
With a pair of new white gold models in 36.5mm and 40mm, and a special 40mm platinum limited edition for the Vacheron Constantin Excellence Collection, the Historiques American 1921 line continues to combine casual sprezzatura with the language of old-world luxury.
Although arguably very similar, these new Historiques American 1921 watches are set apart by more than the metal used to create their cases. In white gold, with painted markings and a warm brown leather strap, the 1920s shine through in the most Caraway way. Or, in full platinum with a sandblasted platinum dial set with white-gold Arabic numerals – the Historiques American 1921 Platine Excellence Collection ? That’s the whole Gatsby, my dear.

I remember the first time I saw a 1921 American in person. It was as if Vacheron Constantin saw Panerai Radiomir and said, “Keep my genius, old sport.” The fact is that the design is ahead of any Panerai with a good measure, and this is one that has been in the stable VC for a century, sitting confidently outside the reserved character of the brand to offer something with a taste of sports that pre-war. No. You haven’t forgotten the era of great sports cars, social romance, and the promise of the American dream. And, like the quiet call of the ethereal green light across the bay, the Historiques American 1921 has a certain charm, especially in white gold.

As already mentioned, these exciting new models from Vacheron Constantin include two unlimited production versions in white gold (36.5mm and 40mm), and a 100-piece limited edition model in platinum (also part of the brand’s growing “Collection of Platine Excellence” including models from most of the VC family delivered in special and pure platinum – see additional examples here ).
As for the white gold, the two models are basically the same, except for the difference in size. As is common in the modern interpretation of this design, the crown is located in the two o’clock corner of the case thus aligning with the 12 o’clock mark on the dial design. Interestingly enough, and also not seen on the original models, the sub-seconds display is not inclined to match the dial. Instead, it guides in a traditional way, according to the true “north / south” of the dial relative to the situation. It’s a quirky design element that further invests in the unusual personality of these watches.
With painted numbers on a silver-toned dial, the vintage effect is particularly strong and the mostly monochromatic execution looks particularly beautiful on a dark brown leather strap.
If you really want to flex as hard as possible on the gates and flat tires that came to sipping on giggle water for free and swimming in your pool, no one is going to call a bunk at the endlessly spicy Historiques Collection American Excellence 1921 Platine , which fits its 40mm 950 platinum case with a sandblasted platinum dial and applied white gold markers.

With the same movement found within its white gold siblings, the Platine 1921 takes things seriously and production is limited to 100 numbered examples. Fitted on a dark blue alligator strap, it’s nothing short of the bees knees.
All three models use the same movement common to the other entries in the American 1921 family, the hand-wound Vacheron Constantin caliber 4400 AS. Visible through a wide display cover, with 65 hours of power reserve supporting hours, minutes, and sub-seconds, the 4400 beats AS at 4 Hz, is only 2.8mm thick, and bears the Mark of Geneva.
An esoteric product within their larger range of watches, the Historiques American 1921 remains an attractive offering and a welcome home to white gold. Prices start at $30,400 for the 36.5mm, with the 40mm white gold listed at $36,800 and the limited edition in platinum topping out at $51,000. But, if you’re in the mood – I’ll take it for granted it’s all worth it put together.
