My last article analyzing the fielding performance of Test batsmen was published in April 2010. The quartet of Steve Smith, Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson and Joe Root had yet to score a single Test between them. Sachin Tendulkar had seven international hundreds still in his tank; 429 Tests were played between then and 1 July 2020. The deadly coronavirus was still ten years away. The beautiful concept of Weighted Batting Average was an idea on my work board. I had yet to meet Milind, who helped me formulate many of my ideas, including the WBA. Barack Obama was in his first term as president of the United States. So you can say that a lot of water has flown under many bridges since then. generation veterans have crossed the halfway mark in their Test careers. The WBA concept adds value because it negates the negative effects of high non-emissions. You can read more about WBA here In the graphs below I have shown the WBA levels on the left and running on the right. On the left are the match graphs for places one to five, the top 16 and the bottom three. To the right, the top 20 teams at each position are shown, along with the average rate at which those players scored during the game. Crops depend on location. For open positions, the cut-off is 3000 runs. For spots 3-7 it’s 2000. For spots 8 and 9 it’s 1000 runs, and for the last two spots it’s 500. The last three spots shooting are shown in one graph. Finally, an overview of all the strike points is displayed.
England always have good openers. Three of the top four names in the WBA division are English – Herbert Sutcliffe, Jack Hobbs and Len Hutton. Bob Simpson comes in at No. 3. All four have 50-plus WBAs. Virender Sehwag is at the fifth position. Dennis Amiss, Matthew Hayden, Sunil Gavaskar, David Warner and Graeme Smith complete the top ten. Alastair Cook scored the most runs in the opening position – almost 12,000, or 95% of his matches. He batted at No. 3 in several Tests early in his career and scored nearly 600 runs there. Gavaskar is next with over 9500 runs. He hit No. 4, 5 and 6 several times, even when he made his top papers, 236 didn’t come out. Graeme Smith has scored more than 9000 runs as an opener and he often bats there. Hayden scored all his runs as an opener. Sehwag started in the middle but got most of his runs in the opener. Among the players currently on the list, Hayden, Mark Taylor, Marcus Trescothick, Michael Slater, Bill Lawry and Conrad Hunte all scored their runs in the opener.
One thing we can say without a doubt is that no one can say more than Don Bradman at No. 3, or for that matter anywhere. He has an incredible WBA of 93.1. Wally Hammond and Ken Barrington come up with 65 plus WBAs. It is clear that England have been very well served in the top three. Then came three West Indians – playing years apart but all great batsmen – George Headley, Viv Richards and Brian Lara. Both have 58 plus WBAs. Kumar Sangakkara, Rohan Kanhai, Ricky Ponting, Ted Dexter and John Edrich occupy the next five spots. Both have WBAs over 50. Sangakkara scored almost his entire career, which is ranked No. 3, with 11,600 runs. Rahul Dravid is yet another batsman who managed to complete more than 10,000 runs at this important venue. Then comes the modern terror trio – Hashim Amla, Cheteswar Pujara and Kane Williamson. Bradman follows next with over 5000 runs. Sangakkara’s 94.2% is the highest in this career.
Many Don’t Talk About It But Rohit Sharma Has Been Absolutely Poor In Ipl With The Bat. Forget Average, Even His Strike Rate Is Ridiculous!
Now we come to a place dominated by modern giants. If there is any doubt about Steven Smith’s place at the top, it should be put to rest with his WBA of around 65 in the No. 4 position. But it’s clear he’s hit everywhere as he’s only hit 51% of his games this career. Everton Weekes, who recently passed away, is in second place with almost 60 WBA. Graeme Pollock chips in with a 56-plus WBA. What he could have achieved with a full time job is amazing. Virat Kohli gets the rightful fourth spot. Barrington, ranked No.3 on the list, is currently No.5. Mohammad Yousuf, Jacques Kallis, Greg Chappell, Norman O’Neill and Denis Compton complete the top ten. He is followed by two modern-day greats – Lara and Tendulkar – with more than 50 WBAs. On the right, Tendulkar is the runaway leader with nearly 13,500 runs at No. 4. This represents about 85% of his work. This is also the highest speed rating of any location. He is followed by three modern champions – Mahela Jayawardene, Kallis and Lara. Then comes Javed Miandad. Ross Taylor’s 92% is the highest percentage of the game at No.4.
Michael Clarke has a WBA best of over 55 and bats at No. 5. Among today’s batsmen, Clarke doesn’t always get the respect he deserves. AB de Villiers comes next, next to Clarke. Zaheer Abbas is the only other player to score 50 plus WBA at number 5. Yousuf and Steve Waugh complete the top five. The next five batsmen are middle batsmen. Shiv Chanderpaul leads the all-team list, having scored nearly 7000 runs at number 5. Steve Waugh follows, followed by Clarke. Misbah-Ul-Haq’s 89% is the highest in the batting No.5’s career.
Chanderpaul switches sides as we move from number 5 to number 6. In the table above, he leads the WBA groups with a value of 51 plus, the only player over 50 in this position. de Villiers follows. Then came two West Indies batsmen – Garry Sobers and Clive Lloyd – and another 1980s graduate, Allan Border. Steve Waugh has scored more than 3000 runs at number 6 and is followed by Asad Shafiq. Usually this is a place for an all-rounder – Sobers, Ben Stokes, Ian Botham and Tony Greig find a place on this list. Greig scored three-quarters of his career at No. 6.
At number 7, Adam Gilchrist leads both tables. He has scored 3948 runs for an impressive WBA of 41. This is yet another achievement. Any discussion of top Test players without Gilchrist’s name in the mix is meaningless. None. 7 is a group of wicketkeepers with only Kapil Dev cracking the gloveman group. Very few other players have more than 30 WBAs. Brad Haddin scored 90% of his career runs at number 7.
Cummins Urges Australia Batters To Step Up Against Pakistan In Bengaluru
At number 8 it is Daniel Vettori in miles. He has a best WBA of 34 and has also scored the most runs. It was in the second half of his career that his batting skills came to the fore. Kapil has a good WBA, over 30, as does Mark Boucher. Daren Sammy scored 84% of his runs batting at number 8.
Vettori also leads this table as he hit No. 9 in his early days. When a batsman reaches around 22 at No. 9, there is no other way to force him and that is what New Zealand did. And how well Vettori has repaid them. Stuart Broad and Brett Lee are also very good here, over a WBA of 17. Broad leads the pace table, closely followed by Vettori. This was Broad who was the world’s best batsman, not the bogus one who comes to bat these days.
In the table of all batting positions, Bradman leads, followed by Hammond, Barrington and Steven Smith. That’s a big group of hitters for Smith to step into. Only four hitters have surpassed 10,000 hits. Tendulkar leads with 13,492 runs followed by Cook, Sangakkara and Dravid. All about the present; no doubt this reflects the number of Tests played during this period. It is interesting to see where only three openers get a place
