“Beckart is a very famous name in glassmaking, and one of the great glassmakers of the 19th century is the only one left in business today,” said Giles Forster, an expert on 19th-century furniture and sculpture at Christie’s in London.

In the year 1764, King Louis XV of France granted permission to establish a glass factory in the city of Baccarat. In the 19th century it became the Compannie des Cristalleries de Baccarat, which produced objects that are synonymous with luxury and still exist today.

Baccarat Crystal Lamp

In the mid-19th century, Baccarat discovered that adding nickel oxide to the manufacturing process created a colorless, completely transparent product that resembled precious rock crystal. Baccarat glass was made from ‘crystal glass’, which, according to Forrester, “was highly prized, not only for its extraordinary clarity, but also for its great strength and weight.” The term ‘crystal’ can only be applied to glass containing at least 24 percent lead oxide.

In the 19th century, the main part of baccarat production was dinner service, perfume bottles, paperweights and jewelry. Chandeliers were among the most expensive works of art made in Bakra – often commissioned for exhibitions or commissioned only by very wealthy patrons such as the Czar of Russia, Topkapi Palace in Istanbul and the Maharajahs of India.

Baccarat chandeliers still made today are particularly prized, and the best examples come from the late 19th century when Baccar combined ‘crystal glass’ with gilded bronze – or ‘ormolo’, as it is known – sculptural mounts.

The cherubs mounted on ormolo on this chandelier make it one of the most sought after examples of 19th century control. The finest and most sought-after Baccarat chandeliers of this period feature gilded bronze carvings or are mounted on ormolo, like the cherubs holding candlesticks in the example above.

Baccarat collaborated with sculptors such as Francois Hippolyte Moreau (1832-1927) and Ormolo bronze foundries such as Thiebault Freres to create such sophisticated and important works of art. Combining baccarat glass with gilded bronze makes this chandelier more desirable and rare than a simple glass example.

“I’ve always looked at the quality of taking the Ormolo Mountains,” explains Forrester. “Before the decoration and finishing, the parts must be assembled, so I want the joints that are visible under the curtain, between the arms and the wounds of the characters.

Forster also wants the ‘quality of the little details – how the soil is made or called, how it is fired after it has been thrown’. This is evident in the way the face and hands are finished – the figures of the hands should be clear and the face should be character driven but lifelike.

Since the chains and drops must be removed and fixed whenever they are moved, it is inevitable that some of the glass drops and blinds will be lost, replaced or re-established.

“I look to make sure that most of the glass is original,” said the expert. “Control glass is blown with great skill and is made by hand. You can see it especially in the small imbalance in the teardrop-shaped scales.’

The work of the glass cutter is highly skilled as a glass blower. “The crystal is carved like a sculpture to a depth of one minute by holding the glass with a wheel that rotates with a set of sandstone or diamond,” explains Forrester.

“With control, I look at the weight of the cup,” explains Forrester. ‘It should be heavy in the hand, with a rock crystal-like color that gives off a slightly dark sheen when you look at it. The black color and excellent control glass cut diffuses the light in a uniquely attractive way, giving it a diamond-like sparkle.

Forrester looks for marks, stamps, and signatures to determine authenticity and make an accurate date estimate. You will often see a white etched mark on Baccarat glassware. On chandeliers, it’s usually done in different capitals than on drip pans,’ he says. For gilt bronze, the control stamp shows the decanter between the wine glass and the glass (as described below).

The relief glass under the solid glass ball – or boss – is stamped with the control symbol depicting a decanter between a wine glass and a glass.
