Craps is a dice game where players bet on the results of rolling a pair of dice. Players can bet money against each other (playing “street craps”) or against a bank (“casino craps”). Because little equipment is required, ‘street dice’ can be played in an informal setting. While rolling the dice, players can use slang terminology to place bets and actions.

In 1788, “Crabs” (later spelled crabs) was a shiny variant of the dice hazard (also spelled gamble).

Craps originated in the United States from a simplification of the Western European game of chance. The origins of the danger are unclear and may date back to the Crusades. Hazard was brought from London to New Orleans around 1805 by the returning Bernard Xavier Philippe de Marigny de Mandeville, a young gambler and scion of a wealthy landowning family in colonial Louisiana.

Although the dice shooter in danger can choose any number from five to nine as the base number, De Marini has simplified the game so that the base number is always sev, which is the mathematically optimal choice (the choice with the least disadvantage to the shooter). Both gambling and its simpler derivative were unknown and rejected by Americans of his social class, prompting de Marigny to introduce his novelty to the local lower class.

Field workers trained their brethren and sailors who carried the new game across the Mississippi River and its tributaries. To celebrate the popular success of his novelty, de Marigny named a street in his new New Orleans subdivision the Rue de Craps.

The central game, called pass from the French word pas (meaning ‘pace’ or ‘step’), has been gradually supplemented over the decades by many companion games that can be played simultaneously with pass. The name craps is now applied to the collection of tape games and is derived from the mispronunciation of the lower-class Louisiana word crabs, which in aristocratic London was the nickname for the numbers two and three.

In danger, both “crabs” always immediately lose numbers for the first roll of the die, regardless of the base number chosen by the shooter. Also in danger: if the base is seven, the number twelve is added to the crabs as a losing number on the first roll of the dice. This structure is retained in the simplified game called pass. All three losing numbers on the first roll are collectively called the dice numbers.

For a whole year after its introduction, casinos were using rogue dice. About 1907, a dice manufacturer named John H. Winn in Philadelphia introduced a layout that included both Don’t Pass bets and Pass bets. Almost all modern casinos use his innovation, which encourages casinos to use fair dice.

Craps exploded in popularity during World War II, prompting most young Americans of every social class to join the military. The street version of dice was popular with soldiers who often played with a blanket as a shooting surface. Their memories of the war made dice the dominant casino game in post-war Las Vegas and the Caribbean. After 1960, several casinos in Europe, Australia and Macau began offering dice, and after 2004, online casinos expanded the game’s distribution worldwide.

Bank craps or casino craps is played by one or more players who bet against the casino, not against each other. Both players and dealers stand around a large rectangular dice table. Seating is not recommended by most casinos unless the player has a medical reason for needing a seat.

Players use casino chips, not money, to bet on the Craps “layout”, a canvas surface on which the various bets are displayed. Wagers vary slightly between casinos in terms of availability, locations and payouts. The tables look something like bathtubs and are available in different sizes. In some places, chips are called checks, tokens or plaques.

Opposite one long side is the casino table: a maximum of two thousand casino chips in stacks of 20. The opposite long side is usually a long mirror. The table’s U-shaped ds have dual layouts and standing space for approximately eight players. In the center of the layout is an additional group of bets used by players of both ds. The vertical walls of each d are usually covered with a rubber target surface covered in small pyramid shapes to randomize the dice that hit them. The top edges of the table walls have one or two horizontal grooves where players can store their spare chips.

The table is managed by up to four casino employees: a boxer who sits (usually the only seated employee) behind the casino bench, who manages the chips, supervises the dealers and deals with “coloring” the players (exchanging small chips dominance for bigger dominance to keep the chips on the table); two main dealers who stand on either side of the boxman and collect and pay out bets to players around their half of the table; and a stickman, standing directly opposite the boxer at the table, takes and pays (or orders the main dealers to do so) in the center of the table, announces the results of each throw (usually with a distinctive sound), and moves the dice through the layout with an outstretched wooden stick.

Each official also watches for mistakes by the others, due to the sometimes large number of bets and the hectic pace of the game. In smaller casinos or at quiet times of the day, it may happen that one or more of these employees are absent and that their work is taken over by someone else or that the player capacity decreases.

Casino Craps For The Winner

Some smaller casinos have introduced “mini-craps” tables operated with just two dealers; instead of two essentially identical sides and the center zone, one set of main bets is placed in advance, divided into center bets. The dealer’s responsibility has been adjusted: while the stickman continues to handle the cter bets, it is the main dealer who handles all other bets (as well as the exchange of cash and chips).

In “street dice”, on the other hand, there is no marked table and the game is often played without a brake for the dice to hit. (Despite the name “street craps,” this game is often played at home, usually on an uncarpeted garage or kitchen floor.) Bets are made in cash, never in chips, and are usually thrown onto the ground or floor by the players. There are no observers and so the progress of the game, the fairness of the rolls and the way payouts are made for winning bets are controlled by the players themselves.

Each casino can set which bets are offered and the payouts for them vary, although the basic set of bets and payouts is typical. Players take turns rolling two dice and the one rolling the dice is called the “shooter”. Players can bet on the different options by placing chips directly on the designated areas of the layout or by asking the main dealer or stickman to do so, depending on which bet is being made.

While playing as a shooter, a player must have placed a bet on the “Miss” line and/or the “Don’t Miss” line. “Miss” and “No Miss” are sometimes called “Win” and “No Win” or “Good” and “Wrong” bets. The game is played in rounds and these Pass and Don’t miss bets are bets on the outcome of a round. The shooter receives a number of dice (usually five) from the “stickman” and must choose two per round. The remaining dice are returned to the stickman bowl and are not used.

Each round has two phases: “exit” and “point”. The dice are thrown to the left. To start a round, the shooter makes one or more coming out throws. The shooter must shoot further back
