When Bet365 First – I can’t believe it’s been five years since I started my career in recruiting. You’re feeling particularly ageless until you’re reminded that The Killers’ debut album, Hot Hot Fuss, came out sixteen years ago. It’s a joke. Today marks a full year since my first day at the bet365 office in Stoke-on-Trent, and I’d like to share both experiences with you.

Maybe I wanted a little too much. Although my role is based in Manchester, everyone who joins bet365 spends their first day completing an induction at Stoke (normally, but more on that later!). I didn’t know what the traffic would be like so I left at 6am and arrived an hour later. I was two hours early, walking around the nearby business park trying to pass the time and find a coffee shop. The combination of excitement and nerves of starting a new job definitely got the better of me! Fortunately, Google Maps came to the rescue, I found a coffee and patiently waited for others to arrive at their convenient time.

After my enthusiastic start, I completed my induction and was introduced to manager Dan and my colleagues Alicia and Steph, who are part of the technology recruitment team at Stoke. Dan had arranged for me to meet with some of the hiring managers, so I spent the rest of the day exploring various technology functions. I remember being drawn back by everyone’s passion for what they do. It was incredibly exciting to meet stakeholders from different areas of the business and I now have great relationships with these people. I’m terrible at naming people in good times, and at the end of the day I can’t remember a single person looking at my notes. Fortunately, I’ve spent enough time talking to them now that I don’t forget who they are. I hope they don’t forget who I am!

All that’s left is learning new systems, people, departments, and, of course, recruiting. I vividly remember my first hire. As in-house recruiters we don’t have goals, but landing the first job at a new business is always exciting, and in some ways, a rite of passage. When I joined a new company, I felt some internal pressure to perform in my first role and I was delighted when Steve Gaughan took the job as data analytics manager about a month after joining. I recently worked with Steve to build his digital analytics team, and one of the main things that motivates me about internal recruiting is that the people you hire will one day become your hiring managers, and that’s great. A level of mutual trust has already been established.

A lot has changed since joining the company a year ago. Of course, no one could have predicted what would happen with Covid, and I’m under no illusions that I’m incredibly lucky. No one in Bet365 technology has cut corners, including myself, and our plans as a business for expansion remain unchanged. Recruiting shows no signs of slowing down and we have welcomed a large number of new colleagues, albeit from a distance. We are now at a point where we are back in the office with the flexibility to work from home when needed. The company has gone to great lengths to ensure our offices exceed government requirements for a Covid-safe workplace, and it’s great to be back. While working from home is great, I generally feel more energized and productive in an office environment and prefer to be able to work from home whenever I want. There are only so many zoom conference calls one person can handle!

Today marks 5 years since I started my career in recruiting. Like many others, I joined an agency after graduating from university because of the high learning potential. To be honest, I didn’t know what else to do, but I’ve always loved technology and it was great at the time. My career started in Rulian, where I joined the IT business development team. It quickly became clear that cold calling and hard selling were not for me, but I enjoyed working on existing accounts and delivering to these clients. Would be a more appropriate term) I moved into an internal accounting consultant role and it was the best move I ever made. This role taught me what I know today, what it takes to be successful in recruiting, and I am grateful for the experience. I’ve met some fantastic people, some of whom have started their own recruitment businesses and are doing incredibly well. I knew that my real motivation was to be the person to hire managers and develop internal teams, and this was a step in the right direction.

Another thing worth mentioning about my time at Rullian was working for director John Hitchener at the time. John is one of the best people, one of the best leaders I have ever met and am still in contact with today. His office door was always open, and he really brought out the best. He also added uniqueness to everything he did. I remember the first Christmas party; I was only there for two months and I knew everyone, including John. In the middle of the night, and I still didn’t realize it, John took a large bucket of ice water, stood on a chair, and poured it over his head. The suit he wore would not have been cheap. The room exploded. I think agency recruiting leadership is the best.

During my time at Rullion, I worked for clients such as United Utilities and Cooperative, then experienced the digital transformation of their funeral business. But even though I worked for two specific clients, I saw a disconnect in my role with these companies. I built long-term relationships with hiring managers and candidates, but I felt disconnected from what was going on at these companies. At this point I knew I wanted to work from home and be closer to the action, so I applied for a technical job at Sainsbury’s.

Sainsbury’s was a fantastic company. I’ve been there for over two and a half years and I’m still in touch with the people I work with. The work itself was interesting, internal training and development was secondary. I would recommend him as an employer to anyone. From Agile courses to spending a full day on cloud computing with AWS Architects, a lot of my technical recruiting knowledge comes from this role and I’m fortunate to learn a lot. I worked as a Technology Recruiter and after 11 months was promoted to Senior Recruiter, taking on additional responsibilities alongside other seniors such as managing relationships with external PSL recruitment agencies and representing Sainsbury’s at various technology conferences.

As a tech recruiter, you’ll be talking to managers and candidates from time to time to understand the roles you’re recruiting for. But nothing beats specialized courses led by experts. I still refer to notes from these sessions today.

Apart from my professional development, I had the best nights out with the Sainsbury’s team and came back with so many happy memories. The team culture was great and we had some great nights. I think happiness is sometimes a retrograde feeling at work. During the day, when you’re on top of things, it’s nice to celebrate your shared success with the team.

All of which brings me to today and bet365. It’s an exciting time for us as we expand into the US market.
