It is the most played casino banking game in the world. It uses decks of 52 cards and descd from the international family of casino bank games known as “twenty one”. This family of card games also includes the European games vingt-et-un and pontoon, and the Russian game Ochko [ru].
Why Is 21 Called Blackjack
Blackjack players do not compete against each other. The game is a matching card game where each player competes against the dealer.

Blackjack’s immediate predecessor was a larger version of tvti-one called vingt-un, an unknown (but possibly Spanish) game. The first written reference is in the book of the Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes. Cervantes was a gambler, and the protagonists of his “Rinconete and Cortadillo” from Novelas Ejemplares, cheated at cards in Seville. They are good at cheating in veintuun (Spanish for “twenty one”) and say that the object of the game is to get 21 points without going over and that an ace is worth 1 or 11. It is played with the Spanish blessing deck.
“Rinconete i Cortadillo” was written between 1601 and 1602, meaning that vtuuna was being played in Castile since the early 17th century or earlier. Later references to this game are found in France and Spain.
And in England during the 1770s and 1780s, but the first rules appeared in England in 1800 under the name vingt-un.
Twenty-one, also known as vingt-un, appeared in the United States in the early 1800s. The first American rules were an 1800s Glish publication from 1825.

The glish vingt-un later developed into its American variant which was superimposed on blackjack around 1899.
According to popular legend, when vingt-un (“twenty-one”) was introduced to the United States (in the early 1800s, during World War I, or in the 1930s, depending on the source), casinos offered bonus payouts to stimulate interest of the player. One such bonus was a t-to-one payout if the player’s hand consisted of an ace of spades and a black jack (either the jack of clubs or the jack of spades). This hand was called “blackjack”, and the name stuck after the t-on-one bonus was removed.
The French card historian Thierry Depaulis explains this story, pointing out that miners during the Klondike Gold Rush (1896-1899) gave the name blackjack to the American vingt-un, and the bonus was the usual Ace and any card of 10 points. Since blackjack also refers to the mineral zincblde, which was often associated with deposits of gold or silver, suggesting that the name of the mineral was transferred by the miners to the bonus arm above. He could find no historical evidence of special bonuses for black-black jack combinations.

At a blackjack table, the dealer faces five to nine slots to play behind a semi-circular table. Between one and eight standard decks of 52 cards are shuffled together. To start each round, players place a bet in a “bet box” at each position. In jurisdictions that allow reverse betting, up to three players may be in each position. The player whose bet is in front of the betting box controls the position, and the dealer consults with the controlling player for game decisions; Other bettors “play back”. A player can usually control or bet in as many boxes as he wants at a single table, but an individual cannot play at more than one table at the same time or place multiple bets within a single field. In most American casinos, players are limited to playing one to three positions at the table.

Dealers deal cards from a deck of one or two hands, from the dealer’s shoe, or from a shuffling machine. One card is dealt per position and a clockwise bet to the dealer’s left, followed by one card to the dealer, followed by an additional card for each position played. A player’s starting cards can be dealt face up or face down (more common in deck games).
The object of the game is to win money by building card totals that are greater than those in the dealer’s hand but not exceeding 21, or by standing at a total in the hope that the dealer will buy. On their part, players choose to “hit” (take a card), “stop” (d their turn and stop without taking a card), “double” (double the bet, take one card and finish), “deal” ( if two cards have the same value, separate them to make two hands), or “surrder” (leave half the bet and withdraw from the game).
Number cards count as their number, jacks, queens and kings (“face cards” or “faces”) count as 10, and aces count as 1 or 11 depending on the player’s choice. If the total exceeds 21 points, it will lose and all bets on it will be lost immediately.
After the boxes are finished playing, the dealer’s hand is settled by drawing cards until the hand reaches 17 or more. If the dealer has a total of 17, including an ace worth 11 (“soft 17”), some games require the dealer to stand while other games require another draw. The dealer never doubles back, splits or surrenders. If the dealer hits, all of the player’s remaining hands win. If the dealer does not fold, any remaining bets win if their hand is higher than the dealer’s and lose if it is lower.

The player’s total of 21 on the first two cards is “natural” or “blackjack,” and the player wins immediately unless the dealer also has one card, in which case the hand is tied. In the event of a tie (“push” or “stand”), bets are returned without adjustment. Blackjack beats any non-blackjack hand, even one with a value of 21.
Winnings are paid in ev money, except for blackjack players, who are traditionally paid at a ratio of 3 to 2. Most casinos today pay blackjack less than 3:2. This is common in single deck Blackjack games.
Blackjack games usually offer a side bet called insurance, which can be placed when the dealer’s card is an Ace. Additional side bets are sometimes available, such as “Dealer Match” which pays when a player’s cards match the dealer’s top card.
After the first two cards, the player has up to five options: “hit”, “stand”, “double”, “split” or “pass”. Each option has a corresponding hand signal.

Hand signals help the “eye in the sky” to make a video of the table, which resolves conflicts and identifies the seller’s mistakes. The hand can “hit” as many times as you like until the total is 21 or more. Players must stand for a total of 21. After a capture or stand, play continues with the next hand by moving around the table.
