One of the oldest and smallest distilleries in Kentucky, the modern Woodford Reserve Distillery was built on history and was located on the site of an old Kentucky waterworks site where Elijah Pepper began making whiskey in 1812. It was on these sites that Master Distiller James was ordained years later Christopher Crow. he modified his whiskey making methods which became common practice, including the use of sour mash for fermentation.

This is not the first time that Woodford has offered a rare edition of Baccarat, which first came out last year. However, the bottle was only available at Duty Free retailers, making it difficult to get hold of without a passport (and a $1,500 price tag at the time).

Woodford still plays the French link on this release. Baccarat, which celebrates more than 250 years, was founded in 1764 by King Louis XV. And because Woodford is located in Versailles, Kentucky, it has carried the name of French royalty for generations.

But now that we’ve tasted a sample, it’s clear that the marketing language isn’t needed – this whiskey is delicious.

However, three years in French ex-Cognac wood matured this honey well. Vanilla and cocoa make their way from the nose to the finish, with peach orchards on the nose and nuts and oranges on the palate. The result is sweet and smooth and very tasty. It really brings out this otherwise subtle caramel note that comes through the barrel.
