2023 Cricket World Cup Tournament Format – The International Cricket Council (ICC) ODI World Cup is one of the most anticipated events in the cricket calendar. Held once every four years, the tournament brings together the best cricketing nations from around the world to compete for the prestigious title of World Champions.
The ICC World Cup 2023 is scheduled to be held in India from October 5, 2023 and will continue till November 19, 2023, but the excitement surrounding the event is already building. This will be the first time that India will host the tournament exclusively on its home soil. In the past, in 1987, 1996 and 2011, this event was organized by India in collaboration with neighboring countries Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The ICC released the ODI World Cup 2023 schedule on Tuesday, June 27. The first match will be played on October 5 between England and New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
2023 Cricket World Cup Tournament Format
The ICC Under-50 Men’s World Cup will follow the same format as the 2019 World Cup. There will be a total of 10 teams. 48 matches will be played. The top 8 teams from India, Pakistan, Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Afghanistan and Bangladesh qualify for the tournament. The remaining 2 teams will be selected from the Super League World Cup matches. The tournament will be held in a round-robin format, with each team playing once against the other 9 teams. After the two-round phase, the top 4 teams qualify for the semi-finals, with the top two teams progressing to the final.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 is scheduled to be played by 10 teams, these teams are India, England, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Afghanistan.
The matches will be played at several venues across the country such as Ahmedabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Delhi, Indore, Dharamsala, Guwahati, Rajkot, Raipur and Mumbai. Below is the list of stadiums for ICC World Cup 2023:
Timing wise, the day/night matches start at 14:00 IST. While the daily matches start at 10:30 AM IST. In total we have 6 daily matches and 42 D/N matches. India, England and South Africa are the only three teams not to play a match. While Bangladesh will play a total of three day matches.
Team India will begin their World Cup campaign on October 8 against eventual champions Australia in Chennai. Other big matches are against Pakistan in Ahmedabad (October 15), England in Lucknow (October 29) and South Africa in Kolkata (November 5). India along with 7 teams are selected based on the World Super League table and 2 more will be selected through qualifiers.
While India qualified directly as hosts, the remaining 7 teams namely Pakistan, Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Bangladesh and Afghanistan qualified based on the World Super League rankings. Besides, big teams like Sri Lanka and West Indies will participate in the qualifiers which are scheduled to be held in June-July.
The group stage matches will be played in the format of the ODI World Cup 2023. This will be followed by the knockouts, which will include two semi-finals and one final. In the group stage, each team joins the other 9 teams once; i.e. a total of 45 group stage matches. The top 4 teams will then play in the semi-finals and then move on to the finals. In total, we will see a total of 48 matches played in this World Cup.
The top 4 teams will be selected based on overall ranking in the points table. However, in case of a tie, the choice will be made based on the following priorities.

As for the qualification, it will be played in June and July in Zimbabwe. A total of 10 teams will participate in the tournament. The 10 teams include Sri Lanka, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Netherlands, Ireland, Nepal, Oman, Scotland, United Arab Emirates and United States of America. The top 2 finishers from the qualifiers will qualify for the ODI World Cup 2023. The schedule for the ODI World Cup 2023 is yet to be released pending approval from the local authorities in India.
