Chief selector Ajit Agarkar and captain Rohit Sharma announced India’s squad for the 2023 ICC World Cup at a press conference in Kandy, Sri Lanka on Tuesday, but that doesn’t mean there were no surprises. Sound confusing? Let’s clear this up. The 15-member contingent, or in other words, the core group, was no surprise. Once again, the fit KL Rahul was recalled to the team. Ishan Kishan was chosen as opener and reserve keeper while Suryakumar Yadav overtook Sanju Samson for the reserve middle-order batsman’s spot.
As far as bowling options are concerned, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur have chosen themselves, as have all-rounders Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Yuzvendra Chahal, Prasidh Krishna, Ravichandran Ashwin, Tilak Verma and Samson were the notable omissions. Ashwin and Chahal were not part of the Asia Cup anyway, Samson was a reserve and Krishna and Tilak were selected only because the ACC allowed teams to announce 17-man squads. So where’s the surprise?
This occurs in the absence of nomenclature reservation. India has avoided naming substitute or reserve players for the upcoming World Cup, which begins on October 5 at home, which is a common practice in multinational tournaments and ICC events.
As the ICC does not allow more than 15 players in the main squad, most teams name at least three reserve players. If someone from the first team gets injured, they will usually have priority in choosing a replacement. But it seems India didn’t want to limit them to just three or four names. As the World Cup will be played at home, they will obviously have the chance to include anyone from the team in place of any player.

Notably, the ICC does not make it mandatory for teams to name reserve players. This is a practice that has been commonly adopted by teams over the years to prepare for injury issues. In the last ODI World Cup, India named Rishabh Pant, Ambati Rayudu and Navdeep Saini as their official reserve players.
India will be able to choose a replacement. The fact that he did not reveal the name of the reserve would have no bearing on this. In fact, not naming reserve stakeholders only broadens India’s horizons. The three players named by Agarkar cover all the bases except India’s spin department. Kuldeep Yadav is a specialist long-arm spinner and all-rounders Jadeja and Axar are the other options.
