It was a bridge between the two groups, making assimilation much easier. During its presence in India, it was practiced and used by Indian elites to bid farewell to the British, which not only increased the value of the sport due to its association with the elite, but also helped spread its high status throughout India.
Although it started as a foreign sport, it eventually became associated with India and began to play a role in India’s identity. In the late 19th century, cricket’s image began to shift away from being an exclusively upper-class sport, as players from lower castes and underprivileged communities began to play and make their mark.
With the passage of time, cricket ceased to be a game introduced with polish and began to become embedded in the fabric of Indian culture and society. While other games continued to receive significant media attention, cricket’s association with India and its label as an Indian sport began to grow, diminishing the public importance of other sports.
