Virat Kohli Says He Was Considered ‘failed’ As Captain After 4 Tournaments
It was on the cards, but no one expected the move to happen quickly, not suddenly. Virat Kohli, one of the most successful captains in Indian cricket history, was removed from the ODI captaincy on Wednesday, while Rohit Sharma was given the ODI leadership role and the BCCI underwent a major overhaul ahead of the tour of South Africa.

Kohli left the leadership role with an extraordinary win rate of 70.43, the highest by an Indian ODI bowler who has led the national team in more than 10 matches. In all, he led India in 65 matches in his 95 matches. Talking about taking over the ODI captaincy from MS Dhoni in 2017, Kohli started his campaign with a 2-1 win against England. The saga ended with a 15-game winning streak for both sides in Kohli’s purse.
There has also been a revamp in the Indian coaching staff as Rahul Dravid has taken over from Ravi Shastri. The change is smooth, unlike the white ball captain change. Many welcomed the change, while few called it sudden. Kohli has expressed his desire to continue leading the ODI side until the 2023 World Cup in India while stepping down from the T20 post. But the selection committee still gives the trophy to Rohit.
Virat Kohli T20 Captaincy Record
Virat Kohli announced in September that he would step down from India’s T20I post after the T20 World Cup, citing the “huge amount of work” behind his move. The trio, who took the decision after “a lot of arguments and discussions with people close to me”, including head coach Ravi Shastri and white-ball vice-captain Rohit Sharma.
However, Kohli is “ready” to captain the team in the remaining two formats. “Understanding the task is very important and given my huge workload for the last 8-9 years, playing all three formats and being the regular captain for the last 5-6 years, I feel I need to give myself space to prepare to lead India fully. team in Tests and ODIs -in cricket,” Kohli said in a statement.
“I have given everything to the team during my tenure as T20 captain and will continue to do so as a batsman for the T20 team.”
Soon after, Kohli made another bombshell by announcing his decision to step down as the manager of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) after the 2021 IPL season. Kohli, who took over from Daniel Vettori in 2013, thanked the RCB fans and said he needed space to rejuvenate, regroup and move forward.”
Cricket: Virat Kohli Steps Down As India Test Captain
Virat Kohli’s swansong season ended in a forgettable affair, bringing misery to the skipper.Paat at the ICC’s big event. The Indian camp is hunting for a perfect hurrah for their captain and the trophy is an ideal situation for the entire unit.
After the Twins lost to Pakistan and New Zealand, the Indian team attacked Afghanistan’s bowling attack and later defeated Scotland by six wickets in Namibia. Despite a late comeback, ‘favourites’ India crashed out of the World T20 series, ending the team’s quest for an ICC trophy in the Kohli-Shastri era.
“First of all relief, like I said it’s an honour, but you have to keep things in perspective, it’s the right time for me to manage my job. Every time we take the field, it’s 6-7 years of solid cricket. And it takes a lot out of you,” Kohli had said when asked about his feelings after stepping down as T20I captain.
With Virat Kohli rested and Rahul Dravid at the helm, Rohit Sharma marked his journey as T20I captain on a positive note. India beat New Zealand 3-0 at home, with Rohit scoring two half-centuries, but his first major assignment as white-ball captain could be in South Africa.
Virat Kohli On Being Removed As Odi Captain.
Kohli may have been removed as ODI skipper, but Rohit still sees him as the ‘leader’ of the pack. Appreciating Kohli’s contribution to Indian cricket, Rohit in a recent interview spoke about the importance of his presence in the team.
“His quality (Kohli) has always been there in the team. To average 50 plus in the T20 format is crazy and unreal. Of course with experience… he has batted and batted for India many times. The quality and type of batting is required from difficult situations and he is also the team a leader, all those things you don’t want to miss, don’t want to ignore that guy. His presence is very important for the team,” Rohit said.
The BCCI perhaps wanted complete clarity between red-ball and white-ball management, a prediction that led to the introduction of shared captaincy in Indian cricket. But it was Kohli’s unofficial dismissal that drew the ire of many fans on social media.
A day after Rohit’s replacement, the BCCI thanked Kohli for leading the team with “acuity, passion and determination” during his tenure. The Indian board seemed to be waiting for Kohli to voluntarily step down from the ODI captaincy, but he did not, leaving Rohit in charge.
Virat Kohli As A Captain Record In Test
Kohli’s sacking was not mentioned by the BCCI when it announced Rohit’s appointment as India’s ODI skipper for the tour of South Africa. “The All India Senior Selection Committee has also decided to name Rohit Sharma as the captain of the next ODI & T20I team,” the BCCI said in a statement.
Kohli’s four-year stay as ODI captain, which had gone on a remarkable note, came to an abrupt end with two World Cups to look forward to. Rohit now has less than a year to prepare for next year’s T20 World Cup in Australia, followed by the 2023 ODI World Cup in India.
Virat Kohli’s dismissal was not decided by the Indian board, but the president, captain Sourav Ganguly, has made it clear that they don’t want two white-ball captains. Ganguly cleared the air by saying that he has personally spoken to Kohli about the matter and considers Rohit the right candidate for the job.
“At the end of the day, you can’t have two white-ball captains, I can’t explain more about what was discussed and what the selectors said, but that’s the main reason why Rohit became the white-ball captain and Virat agreed. . . . This,” Ganguly said.
Cricketers On Kohli Captaincy T20i
In fact, the selectors made their decision when Kohli was stripped of the T20 captaincy. Things fell into place perfectly for Rohit after an impressive T20I series win against New Zealand. “I don’t know [about the confusion], but that’s what they [voters] feel,” Ganguly added.
The BCCI also wrote a “thank you” letter to Kohli days after he stepped down from the leadership role. “A leader who is a leader with enthusiasm, passion and determination. Thanks Captain @imVkohli,” BCCI tweeted along with an infographic highlighting Kohli’s achievements during his four-year tenure as ODI skipper.
BCCI also shared Kohli’s tournament win with fans as an “update”. But that didn’t stop the selection committee from criticizing Kohli for “bagging”. Cricketers and fans have welcomed the ‘fixed change’ principle, but the other side is not happy with this change of power and the ousting of India’s most successful manager.
