Kohli Ipl Century
Virat Kohli broke Chris Gayle’s incredible IPL record by smashing his second consecutive century in the league on Sunday night.
Royal Challengers Bangalore star batsman Virat Kohli broke former teammate Chris Gayle’s long-standing Indian Premier League record by smashing his seventh century in the league on Sunday night. Kohli played a decisive knock in RCB’s must-win match against Gujarat Titans in Bengaluru, scoring three runs off 60 balls; This is Kohli’s second consecutive century this season. The 34-year-old batsman also scored 100 runs in the previous match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Chris Gayle blasted his sixth and final century in the tournament in the 2018 edition of the tournament while still representing Royal Challengers. Interestingly, Kohli scored his last century in a tournament before this season against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2019; Earlier this week, he ended his wait for a three-figure tally when he had a successful run against Sunrisers.
Against the Titans, Kohli battled through adverse conditions (due to rain in Bangalore) and a late start and regular wickets in the middle overs to take the Royal Challengers to 197/5 in 20 overs.
Who Said What
The right-handed batsman started the innings cautiously as the players took to the field in a bit of rain. After analyzing the circumstances, both Kohli and RCB captain Faf du Plessis started to take their foot off the pedal and picked up former player Yash Dayal in the fourth over. He hit the Titans pacers for three consecutive boundaries and the duo ended up producing 62 runs in the power play.
After du Plessis (28), Glenn Maxwell (11) and Mahipal Lomror (1) were dismissed in quick succession, Kohli resorted to changing the strike and formed a key partnership with Michael Bracewell (26). Kohli brought up his half-century in 35 balls and shifted gears soon after Bracewell and Dinesh Karthik (0) were again dismissed in quick succession.
Kohli eventually brought up his century off 60 balls, just 25 balls away from reaching his next half-century. He reached the coveted three-figure mark in the last over of the innings against Mohit Sharma when he pushed a delivery to long on.
It was Kohli’s 8th century in T20 cricket, equal to the Australian trio of David Warner and Aaron Finch and Michael Klinger.
