Virat Kohli Steps Down As India Test Captain After Seven Years In Role Following South Africa Series Defeat

The 33-year-old first led his country in red-ball cricket on an interim basis during the 2014 winter tour of Australia before taking over the reins permanently from MS Dhoni at the end of the series.

During his tenure as India’s Test captain, Kohli helped them reach No. 1 in the ICC Test rankings and saw them finish second in the World Test finals last summer.

Kohli said on Twitter, “It’s been seven years of hard work, toil and relentless persistence every day to lead the team in the right direction.

“I did the job with absolute honesty and didn’t miss a thing.” Everything has to stop at some stage and for me as India’s Test captain it is now.

Virat Kohli: ‘going Retro’

“There have been many ups and even some downs along the journey, but never a lack of effort or a lack of belief.

“I’ve always believed in giving 120 percent of myself in everything I do, and if I can’t do that, I know it’s not the right thing to do. I have absolute clarity in my heart and I cannot be dishonest with My team.”

The Indian batsman stepped down from the Twenty20 captaincy after the T20 World Cup in November and was also replaced as one-day captain by Rohit Sharma in December.

You made this trip so memorable and beautiful.

“To Ravi Bhai (Shastri) and the support group who have been the engine behind this vehicle that has taken us consistently into Test cricket, you all have played a huge role in realizing this vision.

“Finally, a big thanks to MS Dhoni who believed in me as a captain and found me a capable person who can take Indian cricket forward.”

Not True’: Virat Kohli Issues Clarification On His Social Media Earnings After Being Named 3rd Richest Athlete On Instagram

Virat Kohli said he would feel “uncomfortable” playing in front of the pavilion named after him in India’s next World Cup match in Delhi.

The star batsman was referring to the venue for his country’s next match in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, in a comment to his teammate KL Rahul.

Team India is currently in Delhi, where Kohli grew up and started his journey as a cricketer, for their second World Cup match against Afghanistan on Wednesday.

On the eve of the match, Kohli sat down with Rahul and discussed their winning partnership that helped the Men in Blue beat Australia in their campaign opener on Sunday. Rahul also took the opportunity to ask about Kohli’s ‘homecoming’ and how he feels about playing in Delhi.

“This is a homecoming for you, we are going to Delhi. I’m sure it’s a very special feeling for you. You grew up there and now have a pavilion named after you, so how does it feel to walk through? Rahul asks Kohli in the video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on X/Twitter.

“The memories are always fresh in your mind when you go back to those moments, you can still feel it because that’s where it all started, that’s where the selectors saw you for the first time and you got an opportunity,” replied Kohli, who started his professional career at cricket in 2006

“So it’s always special to come back and play at the Arun Jaitley Stadium now. It’s a bit embarrassing for me to keep playing and playing in front of the pavilion named after me,” he said.
