Virat Kohli has gone 71 innings in international cricket without scoring a hundred since he scored 136 in Kolkata against Bangladesh in November 2019. Since then, Kohli has played a 22-ball fifty in Kolkata but is yet to reach his 71st international century. Kohli’s T20I numbers are hard to complain about – he has scored 846 runs at 145.11 and an average of 56.40. One might argue that he was denied a hundred in this format only because of his brevity (he made 73, 77 and 80 not out in the series against England in Ahmedabad earlier last year). His form in ODIs has also been excellent, with ten fifties in his last 19 innings, four of which have come in back-to-back matches. No other batter with such a productive streak would come under such scrutiny.
However, Kohli has been dismissed in each of his 49 innings in Tests and ODIs since his last hundred, so unlike in T20Is, he is likely to have run out of time in those innings. It has been quite a long drought for Kohli considering that he has ranked in the top four in these formats. For a man who has set a high standard of turning every extra fifty into a hundred in Tests and ODIs (yet to make a T20I hundred), this poor patch sticks out like a sore thumb. The longest streak of consecutive innings by any batsman in men’s Tests and ODIs where he has been dismissed before reaching a hundred is Kieran Powell’s 94. Including Powell, there have been 22 other instances of batsmen being dismissed before reaching a hundred in 49 or more consecutive innings in Tests and ODIs, like Kohli. However, in none of these cases did these batsmen reach Kohli’s average of 32.57. The closest to Kohli’s average among those 22 batsmen was Alec Stewart, who was dismissed in 49 consecutive innings without reaching a hundred and averaged 27.49 in those innings.
Is Virat Kohli The Greatest Batter In Successful Run Chases?
It’s not the worst century drought cricket has seen, but Kohli has been unlike any other player before him when it comes to converting starts. Think about it: in seven different stretches of 49 innings in Tests and ODIs from August 2017 to January 2019, Kohli scored 17 hundreds. That was one of the 26 or 27 times he topped 50 in blocks over 49 innings. Kohli has now gone 71 innings without scoring a single international century, including T20Is. Contrast that with his best innings run of 71 in international cricket, which he enjoyed at various separate times when he scored 19 hundreds. Don Bradman made 28 hundreds in 71 Test innings separated by World War II. Sachin Tendulkar also made 19 hundreds in 71 innings in Tests and ODIs from March 1998 to November 1999. These are the only runs that have been as productive as Kohli’s or better. That is the standard Kohli fans are used to. Former India captain Virat Kohli has once again failed Test cricket in recent years. With his team desperately needing him to perform in the second innings of the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 Test match against Australia in Indore, Kohli once again let his team and fans down.
Kohli came in at No. 4 in the 15th over and made 13 (26) with the help of two fours at a strike rate of 50 before continuing his ability to leave the inexperienced bowler.
It was in the fourth delivery of the 23rd over that Kohli completely missed the ball in an attempt to get Australian spinner Matthew Kuhneman out. Kohli, who mischosen the shot, was hit just short of the stumps as umpire Joel Wilson did not think and raised his finger.
Although the bottom stayed a bit low, it was still not short enough for Kohli to pull it over the square leg region. Clearly disappointed by the false shot, a dejected Kohli returned to the pavilion without even questioning Wilson’s decision. As in his recent Test innings, Kohli looked confident in the middle, but that cannot be tolerated in times of constant lack of runs.
Virat Kohli Becomes Bharat’s Highest Run Scorer In Wtc Surpassing Rohit Sharma
With the impression that Kohli has left behind a modest patch in Test cricket as he notched up his 28th Test century earlier this year, he has now scored several centuries in 2023. In the last 10 Test innings, Kohli has scored 557 runs. average 55.7.
