It was the first Women’s World Cup organized by two countries, held in the Southern Hemisphere and hosted across multiple confederations (with Australia in the AFC and New Zealand in the OFC).

The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup will feature 32 national teams playing for the prestigious crown. In 2019, 24 teams competed for the trophy, eight fewer than in future editions.

With co-hosts Australia and New Zealand qualifying automatically, the remaining 207 of FIFA’s 209 remaining members had to compete against each other based on their confederation’s qualification process to determine the 30 who competed in the ninth edition of the competition. The exceptions are Chad and Pakistan, whose football associations have been suspended by FIFA.

The AFC Women’s Asian Cup is a World Cup qualifying tournament for AFC members, where the four semi-finalists (China, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines) qualify.

The African Women’s Cup is a World Cup qualifying tournament for CAF members. Four semi-finalists qualify for the World Cup (Morocco, Nigeria, Zambia and South Africa). The losers of the quarter-finals play a one-match replay, with the winners advancing to the confederation matches.

The OFC Women’s Nations Cup is a qualifying tournament for OFC members for the World Cup. New Zealand did not participate because they had already qualified for the World Cup as co-hosts, while American Samoa chose not to participate because of the outbreak. Papua New Guinea went to the inter-confederation playoffs as tournament winners.

51 teams were drawn into nine groups of five and six, and nine group winners qualified for the World Cup (Sweden, Spain, Netherlands, England, Denmark, Norway, Italy, Germany and France). Nine runners-up advance to the playoffs.

In the playoffs, nine teams play two rounds of one-legged matches, the two teams with the best records in the group stage and the matches in the second round qualify for the World Cup (Switzerland and the Republic of Ireland). The team with the lowest combined record enters the inter-confederation playoffs.
