India’s ICC World Cup 2023 squad, announced by chief selector Ajit Agarkar and captain Rohit Sharma at a press conference in Kandy, Sri Lanka on Tuesday, is in line with expectations but that does not mean there are no surprises. Feeling confused? Let us be clear. The 15-member squad, or in other words, the main squad, holds no surprises. KL Rahul has been recalled to the team. Ishan Kishan was selected as the opener and reserve keeper, with Suryakumar Yadav dropping Sanju Samson to the middle-order reserve batsman position.
As for the seam bowling options, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Shami, Mohammad Siraj and Shardul Thakur have the same as all-rounders Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Notable omissions include Yuzvendra Chahal, Parshid Krishna, Ravichandran Ashwin, Thilak Verma and Samson. Ashwin and Chahal were not part of the Asia Cup, while Samson was a reserve and Krishna and Thilak were selected as the ACC allowed teams to name 17-member squads. So where’s the surprise?
This is in the absence of name reservation. India refrained from naming standby or reserve players, a common practice for multi-nation tournaments and ICC events, for the next World Cup at home from October 5.
As the ICC does not allow more than 15 players in the main squad, most teams name at least three reserve players. They are usually preferred when selecting a substitute if someone from the main team is injured. But it seems that India did not want to limit them to just three or four names. By playing the World Cup at home, they have the opportunity to replace a player with someone.

When asked about the same, chief selector Agarkar indicated that in case of injury to anyone from the main squad, the reserves are likely to be those who are currently in Sri Lanka but have missed the World Cup. That is Samson, Tiak and Krishna. “There are 17 guys, KL is 18. So, if you need that cover, those three guys, be it the keeper, the extra seamer or the batter. Tilak is also with us. It’s our top 15. You’re not going to change it because of injuries,” he said.
Notably, the ICC does not mandate that teams name reserve players. This is a common practice that teams have been following for the past few years to prepare for injury concerns. India appointed Rishabh Pant, Ambati Rayudu and Navdeep Saini as official standby players in the last ODI World Cup.
India will be allowed to choose a replacement player. His non-mention of reservation has no bearing on this. In fact, not to mention reserve players, only broadens India’s horizons. Among the three players named by Agarkar, India have covered all the bases except in the spin department. Kuldeep Yadav is a specialist length spinner, while all-rounders Jadeja and Axar are the other options. If Kuldeep gets injured in the middle of the tournament, players like Chahal and Ashwin will be in line.
